Bible Characters Vol. 2 - Gideon to Absalom
Alexander Whyte’s well researched collection of Bible biographies has been of indispensible use to pastors, study group leaders and students of the scriptures for over 100 years. It is the most comprehensive and most well respected source of material for understanding the characters involved in the events of the Bible ever published.

This is indeed the best exposition on Biblical characters ever written! Alexander Whyte reveals insights into the lives of the people of the Bible that casual readers might never find. Then he powerfully applies truths revealed in such a way that the reader is left spiritually convicted and seeking God’s mercy.

Through the scriptures you meet the people of the Bible. But through Alexander Whyte you will come to know them better. Next to the Bible, you will find Bible Characters the greatest help in understanding the men and women in God’s Word. Whyte writes brief biographies faithful to the Biblical text. Without stretching the truth, he stretches our minds to embrace the character of the individuals revealed there. He is never superficial. He writes like a modern newspaperman in terms of human interest and deep insight. It’s just as though he had interviewed an individual and returned to the newspaper office to write up the feature! The reader of these works will not be disappointed as they will walk away with a deeper and greater understanding of those men and women God used in his Word as examples for us all.

I was given extra shifts @ work, there’ll be more work early in 2012 & my section isn’t being made redundant (sorry to those of you who have been, but I’ve been there, done that @ my last job so I appreciate how you feel.) I can keep a roof over my heard for the forseeable future ~ wont have to beg a room @ the Governor’s residence Y E T!

Strange as I don’t have a dog BUT to the kind person sending me dog food samples, thanks! The local cats are enjoying it ~ they prefer the biscuits over the tinned stuff! The Gideon Bible makes good compost & the late night calls remind me to go to the loo (I am getting older!)

Gideon: Discipleship Lessons from the Bronze Age (JesusWalk Bible Study Series)
One of the more poignant moments in Scripture is the scene where an angel appears to Gideon, who is hiding from the Amalekite oppressors, and greets him with the words, “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior!” (Judges 6:12).

Who? Me? Who is the angel talking about? Gideon sees himself as the opposite of a mighty warrior. He comes from a humble clan, and is considered in his family the least likely to succeed. But God sees him differently. God sees Gideon as he will become in the Lord – the way he sees you and me.

The story of Gideon recounts the miracle working power of God to reverse a national tragedy. But it is a personal story, too, a story of emerging faith, of great courage, and of decisive leadership – as well as a story of human betrayal, weakness, and failure. In the process of studying the life this Bronze Age leader in Judges 6 to 8, we learn a number of spiritual truths common to disciples in all ages:

• Learning to trust God, especially when you feel weak and inadequate,
• Taking unpopular, but necessary stands,
• Finding guidance from God to make difficult decisions about your future,
• Experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit to empower you,
• Obeying even when you don’t understand God’s plan,
• Keeping focused on the mission when distractions come, and
• Leaving a spiritual legacy for those who follow you.

Even if you don’t understand much about the Old Testament, you’ll learn a lot in this four-week study. You’ll find your commitment strengthened and your faith growing. God will use this study to prepare you for things that lie ahead of you.

This volume explores Gideon in 4 lessons. A carefully linked table of contents and hyperlinked endnotes/footnotes give the reader quick access throughout the book. Thought-provoking discussion questions make it a useful tool for personal enrichment, small groups, and classes. Extensive endnotes/footnotes assist teachers and preachers with background research for sermon preparation.
